April Newsletter 2014

We had a busy and productive March.  We started the SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence) testing, which is the new end of year testing, this month with grades 3-5.  This first section of testing was on writing.  The students were given two writing prompts, one opinion and one informational. We will continue the testing for math, language arts and science beginning on April 28- May 20th.  Please make every effort to see that your child is to school during this testing window. Here are a few tips to help you prepare your child to do their best.

1.      Explain that the tests will show how much he has learned. Encourage him to try his best, but don’t put so much emphasis on them that he feels stressed.

2.    Limit activities the night before tests. Be sure your child gets to bed on time and sets an alarm for the next morning.

3.    On test day, have your student eat an energy boosting breakfast.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful support of our first Family Leadership Night.  The students did a great job teaching the habits.  7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey is the book that we gave out during our drawing.  It is an excellent book that illustrates each habit and can be purchased on Amazon for those of you who are interested in purchasing this book.

We have our DIBELS testing on April 14 and 15. Please make every effort to have your students to school on these days.

We will have a book fair that will run from April 14-18. The hours of the book fair are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 2:50-3:30 p.m. and Thursday night from 2:50-6:00.  It will also be open during our grandparent lunch on Friday.  This book fair is a buy one get one free!

I have accepted the position as Director of Assessment and Professional Development at the district office, so I will not be returning to Discovery next year.  I have enjoyed my time at Discovery and I have a great love and appreciation for the teachers, staff, students, PTA, parents and volunteers at this school. You all give so much to the school to make it be the best place for students to learn and grow!  I will miss working with each of you and I regard my time at Discovery as a highlight in my career.  The new administrator will be announced in the coming weeks.

Attendance

Regular attendance in elementary school sets up a good pattern for your student’s entire school career.  Show your child that school comes first by trying to keep days off for illnesses and family emergencies. Also, please schedule routine doctor and dentist appointments for after school or over school breaks.
